Some Twitter Threads
It's no secret that I do most of my writing on Twitter. Unfortunately, Twitter doesn't function as a great archive, and it's hard to look up threads that were particularly informative, well-written, and/or viral. That's why I've decided to track some of them here – for curious readers, but mostly for myself to revisit past writing.
Notes:
- I'll probably need to archive these a different way (such as with screenshots) in the event that my tweets, my account, or Twitter ever go down.
- There are a few threads I still need to find, so this isn't a complete list.
Viral Threads
On the Black Panther Party's Free Breakfast Program:
i still think about how when the black panthers started feeding kids free breakfast, the federal government literally was so angry that they started raiding the locations where kids were still eating. this is all intentional and designed. https://t.co/j3AHPxcTsW

On GrubHub's May 17, 2022 Free Lunch Fiasco:
So today, GrubHub offered $15 off orders from 11am to 2pm in NYC, which got thousands of customers to order free meals within that time window.

The issue? They didn't tell restaurants & delivery workers they were doing this.
On Lululemon's Racist Name:
JUST A QUICK REMINDER THAT THE FOUNDER NAMED HIS COMPANY LULULEMON BECAUSE HE THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY HEARING ASIANS SAY THE "L" SOUND WITH AN "R" SOUND. THEY'RE RACIST AF. https://t.co/jHoTAcK21u

Calling out Elon Musk:
i mention this a lot, but the tweets always seem to mysteriously get buried. a reminder elon musk is *not* the founder of tesla nor of its technologies. he bought his way in & forced the founders to sign contracts to name him a co-founder, then proceeded to kick them out. https://t.co/dxpigQq7RW

On Awkwafina's "Blaccent" and Cultural Appropriation:
ok here's something i've been thinking about. awkwafina mentioned that she had a blaccent because that's just how people around her growing up spoke. but she now has a show coming out about a fictionalized version of her growing up and... none of the characters are black. pic.twitter.com/MamFjhjiXQ

On Autonomous Delivery Robots and Labor:
interesting fact: while most people think these robots are self-driving / fully automated, the reality is that they're often always driven through exploited labor by actual people in india, the philippines, and colombia. https://t.co/6O6iedJoXc

On the Anti-Blackness of Boba Guys:
boba guys opened their first location in the sf mission, a historically latinx neighborhood, and had a hand in its gentrification. they then pushed cctv and increased policing around their store & advocated for an all lives matter drink. they are absolutely trash. https://t.co/QDMqtmPo4p

On the Live Action Mulan And Anti-Asian Issues:
Mulan comes out this week for a $30 purchase on top of a Disney+ subscription, so this is a good time as any to remind you that among the director, costume designer, & screenplay writers, no one is Asian. Their research involved going to museums in Europe.https://t.co/Fz0H7foQSj

Awkwafina's Music:
A lot of people don't know that she got big by doing stuff like this, and whenever I make a tweet they come outta the woodworks not having done their homework. https://t.co/gGCTlGmj99

On the History & Philosophy of Math:
This video and its responses have been going viral today, but as someone who has lightly studied the history & philosophy of math, I have to say, these are absolutely excellent questions, and the hate is completely undeserved. Thread time. https://t.co/o6rJ00x4BX

On Embedding Ethics Throughout CS Education:
Agree, and while folks have brought this up time and time again, a few CS Ethics folks (myself included) actually argue that in addition to this, ethics should be embedded *throughout* all STEM courses, not just treated as a one-time / one-off course that's taken separately. https://t.co/xtIAtdM0bV

On Tech Companies, Racist Policing, and Displacement:
tl;dr: Facebook gave $11.2M to the city of Menlo Park where they're headquartered, and a "Facebook Unit" of the local police force was created. A lot of the enforcement has centered on overpolicing & targeting Black & Brown teens in the area using FB bikes. https://t.co/KqjG3lHMuf
