Public blog woes
There's a big drawback with trying to use a blog to journal, because I can't be as upfront with things that I want to talk about. I would love to talk about how my PhD program is going and all the various difficulties (and joys?) that I'm having. I do think there's value in being honest about this experience, especially for folks who want to know what the experience has been like and don't have people they know to ask. But one of the problems with this approach is that if something happens in a given week, I can't write about it right away, or else people who were involved in certain things would be able to find out. Not that they (or really anyone) reads this. But there's still the possibility and risk of it.
I don't want to run this as a private blog, and I don't want to censor myself. All I'll say is that I'm frustrated by some things this week, and I want to talk about them. But I don't personally feel it's appropriate to come on here and speak about certain things in a certain way that might make dealing with people irl more tense than they have to be. Even if I ran an anonymous blog, it would at some point be pretty easy to tell who I was based on the program I'm in, the topics I'm writing about, and how I write about them. So I guess there really are just some things I can't write about in public places...
